Abstract
In 1806 Isobel Gunn, a young Orkney woman, disguised herself as a man and lived among the men of The Company of Adventurers in Canada. She managed to keep her true gender a secret for a year before she was discovered to be a woman about to give birth. Based on a few historical facts, this novel questions how a woman managed to maintain her disguise as a man in a harsh environment, and how she came to be pregnant without her co-workers discovering she was a woman.
